Wisconsin License Plates

The first Wisconsin passenger car license plate was issued in 1905, there were no porcelains produced in the state, even with the early start of the DMV requiring registration and licensing of the state's cars. The 1911 license plate is perhaps the scarcest of all the WN issues. The only slogan used in the state has been America's Dairyland, which was started in 1940 and has continued uninterrupted. The state department of motor vehicles has mostly issued pairs of tags for the state's drivers, with the exception of 1905 thru 1911 and 1942 thru 1945 in which single plates were made, but all other years have been produced in sets. In June 1946 Wisconsin went to a staggered registration system, which is thought to be the first in the Nation.
