Obsolete VA currency Bank of Charleston 5.00 VG 1858

A five dollar Bank of Charleston note dated 1858 and grading very good with tape repairs on the back. Even though the issue date is pre war, this note would have still been circulating in the sparsely populated area of western Virginia during the Civil War era. In 1858 the Virginia General assembly authorized the Bank of Kanawha to move from Malden VA to Charleston VA and change the name to Bank of Charleston. Charleston later became the capitol of the new state of West Virginia when it was split from VA during the Civil War. The bank of Charleston issued denominations of one, five, ten and twenty dollars, but unfortunately only the one and five dollar denominations are seen today.
