Virginia License Plates
Virginia started issuing license plates in 1906 and from 06 thru 1909 the plates were undated porcelain issues, porcelain was used thru 1913. There were only around 6,000 vehicles licensed in Virginia during the 3 years of undated issues, numbers 1 thru 750 are the approximate numbers for 1906. In 1944 the Virginia license plates were made out of fiberboard to save on metal during WWII. Virginia had never been big on slogans, up until the recent graphic issues, the only slogan used in Virginia was on the 1976 LIcense plates which had Independence Bicentennial 1776-1976. Virginia License plates are readily found and new unused examples can be had for most later years, nevertheless, they still cost money, because of people wanting the nice pairs of license plates for their antique cars. The exception is the early porcelain issues which are quite scarce, the 1906 license plate is fast approaching a 5 figure value. VA has mostly issued pairs of license plates except for most of the porcelain issues and the World War II issues, which were issued in singles.
