Rare Virginia Civil War scrip 4.00 Norfolk county grading very good
Type of Confederate Money - Four dollar bill issued by the county of Norfolk Virginia during the Civil War era.
Nickname or Vignettes - A cornucopia surrounding FOUR
Date & Place of Issue - July 22, 1861 from the County of Norfolk, probably Portsmouth, which is the county seat.
Serial Number & Plate Letter - low serial number of 37
Condition - very good, but I think it has a much nicer appearance.
Back - plain and shows wear and fold marks as per grade
Criswell & Fricke Numbers - Not applicable
Number Issued & Printers - Unknown but this is one of the Virginia Civil War rarities, only between 5 to 9 of these are still believed to still exist. There aren't many Norfolk county notes left of any kind or denomination, so these don't come along very often.
Type of Bank Paper Used - thin blue paper
Payable In - The county of Norfolk will pay to the bearer four dollars five years after date, in notes of the Banks of Virginia and in the mean time will receive this Note in payment of poor rates and county levies. Issued under an order of the Court of Norfolk County of June 17, 1861.
Notes - This note has a lot going for it. Besides being a great Virginia rarity from a populous county, it also has a nice appearance for the lower grade, has a low 2 digit serial number and it is also an odd denomination bill. The picture shows the actual Norfolk county confederate money that is for sale, in addition the back of this obsolete civil war currency can be viewed in the photograph gallery.
