VA CSA 50.00 Obsolete Money dated 10-15-1862

This note was issued from Richmond Virginia during the Civil War on October 15, 1862. A mid grade example grading between very fine to extremely fine. This confederate money has the appearance of a higher grade but there are several fold marks, a couple small pinholes and a couple rust spots on this bill. This piece of Virginia currency had the faith of the commonwealth pledged to pay the bearer on demand the 50.00 value of this note. Grover Criswell has this note listed as VA-07. The back of this actual confederate money can be seen in the picture gallery. On the right vignette of the 50.00 Virginia Treasury bills is Ceres seated between Commerce and navigation. James M. Mason is on the left of this note, who was a representive and then Senator from the State of Virginia. He was expelled from the Senate in 1861 for his support for the confederacy. James Mason was then appointed the commissioner of the confederacy to Great Britain and France during the civil war years of 1861 to 1865. On the way to his post, he was captured by the North on the British mail steamer RMS Trent on November 08, 1861 and was confined in Fort Warren at Boston Harbor. He was accused of trying to bring Great Britain into full scale war with the United States. He was released in January of 1862 and went on to London where he represented the confederacy until April 1865. After the war he went to Canada and lived there until 1868, then he returned to Virginia. He died near Alexandria, Virginia on April 28, 1871.
