| A very popular hard to keep in stock 1862 train note. This is the type 39 which has the straight white steam and J. T. Paterson in the lower left side. These were the first interest bearing notes issued in great quantity by the confederacy, they paid interest at the rate of over 7 percent which was around double that of the first interest bearing notes of the Montgomery Issues. This was a sign of the inflation that was to come. The left vignette is a milkmaid, in the center is the train with the white steam with a ship in the background and people in the foreground. This confederate money has 3 interest paid stamps in the back, the 1863 stamp is black and was paid at Augusta Georgia, the 1864 was a red stamp and also paid at Augusta, the last stamp from 1865 is black and was paid at Savannah. These stamps are collectible unto themselves, as some collectors like to acquire the different stampings. The condition of this obsolete civil war currency is almost uncirculated, with nice crisp paper and a good cut with a solid black border all the way around. Sometimes these notes are cut into the design, this one isn't. Issued with a handwritten date on July 8, 1862 from Richmond Virginia, only 284,000 of these were produced, but since they were interest bearing, many were saved. The picture shows the actual confederate money that is for sale, in addition the back of this obsolete civil war currency with the three stamps can be viewed in the photgraph gallery. |
