Type of Confederate Money - Five Dollar treasury bill Nickname or Vignettes - Christopher Gustavus Memminger is on the face of this bill, he served as secretary of the treasury for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. At the right is an allegorical figure that represents Minerva, the Goddess of War. Date & Place of Issue - September 2, 1861 from Richmond Virginia. Serial Number & Plate Letter - 26435 I, the serial number is written twice by hand. Condition - Choice Fine, with good dark green color overprints, there are some edge splits along the bottom margin of this note. There is still a good bit of crispness left in this confederate money. Back - The backs of this obsolete civil war currency were plain, this one is as per grade. Criswell & Fricke Numbers - Criswell is T-33 254Ba, the Fricke # is PF-7, which means this bill was printed on plain paper without any watermarks and only Keatinge and Ball were listed as engravers, Leggett was already out of the business by the time this note was printed. Number Issued & Printers - This is one of the fairly scarce CSA issues as only 136,736 were originally issued by Keatinge and Ball. Type of Bank Paper Used - high quality bank note paper Payable In - Six months after the ratification of a treaty of peace between the Confederate States and the United States, the Confederate States of America will pay to bearer five dollars. Fundable in eight percent stock or bonds of the Confederate States of America. Notes - A nice affordable mid grade example of type 33, these are quite scarce and pricey in the higher grades with uncirculated bills bringing around five thousand dollars or more.
