Type of Confederate Money - 5.00 banknote issued by the Confederate States of America
Nickname or Vignettes - C. G. Memminger, the secretary of the treasury for the CSA is the portrait in the center. At the right is a portrayal of Minerva, the Goddess of War.
Date & Place of Issue - From the 3rd series of notes issued by the CSA early in the Civil War period on September 02, 1861 from Richmond Virginia.
Serial Number & Plate Letter - 14272 written twice by hand with brown ink, the plate letter is H
Condition - Fine, this confederate money has a choice appearance for the grade of fine. The color is still green, the centering is excellent, the only fault is even wear throughout the bill.
Back - This civil war currency has a plain back, this one shows wear as per grade.
Criswell & Fricke Numbers - Criswell number 254, Fricke is T-33, PF-7, which means that Keatinge and Ball is printed at the top left, the color is blue green and the bill is printed on plain paper with no watermarks.
Number Issued & Printers - Leggett, Keatinge and Ball were the engravers for the first run of these notes. The later examples of this confederate money were engraved by just Keatinge and Ball, after Leggett was run out of the business. Only 136,736 were printed.
Type of Bank Paper Used - High quality bank note paper was used, some with the watermarks of J. Whatman and some with CSA. Others, such as this one, was printed on plain paper with no watermark.
Payable In - Eight percent stock or bonds of the Confederate States of America.
Notes - A nice looking note for the grade of fine. The T-33 circulated heavily during the Civil War so therefore are scarce in the upper condition grades. This is a good opportunity to acquire one with decent looks at a good price.
