Southern Obsolete Money

Before the Civil War, currency was mostly local as banks, businesses and localities issued their own currency so they could transact business. The central government did not issue much currency during this era. After the Civil War, the government taxed currency so heavily that no more could be issued, the central bank started printing money at this time.
