South Carolina Confederate Money
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union on December 20, 1860 after the election of Abraham Lincoln as President, whom South Carolinians despised. The vote was not in question, the final tally was 169 for secession and 0 to stay with the Union. Six more states soon followed and the Confederate States of America was formed with the capitol in Montgomery Alabama. The first battle of the Civil War occured at Fort Sumter in Charleston South Carolina on April 12, 1861. General Buearegaurd was the Southern Commander and General Anderson the Union leader. The next day Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter to his former West Point student and thus the Civil War had begun. There was not much confederate money issued in South Carolina during the Civil War. The Bank of the State of South Carolina was by all accounts a State bank and operated during the years 1812 thru 1865. This institution served as the state treasury for South Carolina during its entire existance and as such, notes from this bank are in fact the only state issued bills from South Carolina during the Civil War and pre war years. All specie and change notes under 5.00 were also delegated to this bank. The relationship between the state of SC and this institution was unique in the Confederate states.
