Your Price: $45.00
Item Number: PA Hostetter & Smith 1 cent Var VG
Manufacturer: US Civil War Issues

These coupons were on the labels of the bottles of stomach bitters that were made by Hostetter and Smith and were good for the amount of one cent. During the Civil War these stomach bitters were a big seller with the troops of the Union, mainly because these bitters were mostly made of gin. Hostetter and Smith's bitters were among the most successful during the years of the Rebellion due to the high alcohol content. The picture on the label is of Dr. Jacob Hostetter, who invented the formula and Mr. Smith was his financial backer. The coupons state: For value recieved, we promise to pay to the bearer one cent on demand. I have more than one of these obsolete bills and all will average grade of very good, they have a better appearance, but have been mounted and the residue is still visible on the backs. While not exactly money, these are still fun and collectible americana from the Civil War era. Be advised, these obsolete bills are very small as they were coupons cut off the bottles. I have more than one of these Hostetter and Smith bitters coupons so the one you recieve might not be the one in the picture, but all will be in the very good range of grade.
