New Jersey License Plates

New Jersey began issuing license plates in 1908 and used porcelain to manufacture their passenger automobile tags through 1915. The slogan Garden State was first used on car plates in 1959. New Jersey is an average to cheap cost locale to put together a state run of their passenger automobile license plates. County Coding of the states vehicles began in 1926. In 1959 NJ became one of the first states to use the 3 by 3 format. The full state name was not used on their license plates until 1980.
