Railway Money
St. Louis, Missouri - Terre Haute, Alton & St. Louis Railroad Company $10 Note dated March 21, 1859. This railroad was part of the Atlantic and Mississippi rail line. This southern railroad note was issued just prior to the Civil War in 1859, but would have still been circulating during the rebellion. Several pre-printing paper crinkles are noticed in the paper, which is a common occurence for this denomination and will grade Crisp Uncriculated. This note has a vignette of a train chugging down the rails and states that "For value received Ten Dollars payable in currency at the company's office in Saint Louis on and after the 20th day of June 1860 and receivable after that date at any agency of teh Company in payment for transportation of freight or passengers with interest at the rate of 6 percent per annum, until paid." The picture shows the actual St. Louis railroad note that is for sale, in addition a larger view of this southern obsolete money can be viewed in the photograph gallery. The back of this bank note is plain and is commensurate with the grade.
