Missouri Confederate Money

Missouri was a very divided state during the Civil War, it actually was admitted to the Confederacy without ever having seceded from the Union. During most of the war, the state actually had 2 different state governments. Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson was governor when the Civil War broke out, was a southern sympathizer, but he was unable to get the state convention to join the Confederate States of America. After a military confrontation in St. Louis and a breakdown in talks with the US government over the loyalty of Missouri to the Union, Governor Jackson and most of the state legislature fled from Jefferson City and went to Booneville. General Nathan Lyon captured Jefferson City on May 14, 1861 and set up a pro Northern government. Finally the secessionist governemnt was ran from Missouri and set up their governing of the state from Texas, but of course, by this time, this was an exercise in futility. So, due to these events, most of the Confederate Money issued by the CSA governemnt was in fact, never issued as it was printed on the run and never used. Consequently, the state also had Union notes printed during the Civil War era.
