Massachusetts Union Scrip New England Glass Co 1862 five cents

Obsolete change note from East Cambridge Massachusetts in the denomination of five cents. This fractional currency was by the New England Glass company and was to be drawn upon the Tremont Bank of Boston. The condition is very good, the back is plain and shows considerable wear as per grade. At the left a box states that this was Issued for the purpose of making change to the workmen and payable also at the counting room in sums of even dollars. During the Civil War hard currencies got very scarce even in the North, so businessess had to issue their own scrip and monies so they could continue to transact business.
