1862 US Legal Tender 2 dollars During the Civil War the North also needed money, so these legal tender notes of 1862 were introduced to help finance the war. The 2.00 notes had a portrait of Alexander Hamilton and were signed by Chittenden and Spinner as treasurer of the United States. This example will grade fine, but has a nice appearance for the grade and the serial number is 2062. The pictures show the actual front and back of the 2.00 Civil War Legal Tender note that is for sale.
1862 Union Currency 2.00 featuring Alexander Hamilton and grading Fine Alexander Hamilton (born on January 11, 1755 or 1757, historians aren't exactly sure of which year and died July 12, 1804) was an Army officer, lawyer, Founding Father, American politician, leading statesman, financier and political theorist. One of America's foremost constitutional lawyers, he was a leader in calling the U.S. Constitutional Convention in 1787; he was one of the two leading authors of the Federalist Papers, the most important interpretation of the United States Constitution.
During the American Revolutionary War, Hamilton served chiefly as aide-de-camp to General George Washington. Under President Washington, Hamilton became the first Secretary of the Treasury; and had much influence over the rest of the government and the formation of policy, including foreign and military policy. Hamilton was responsible for the funding of the national debt; federal assumption of the state debts; creation of a national bank; and a system of taxes through a tariff on imports and a tax on whiskey that would help pay for it. Hamilton also created the Federalist party, the first American political party. He of course met his end with the famous duel with Aaron Burr in 1804. Alexander Hamilton has appeared on several issues of United States currency, including most of the issues that were produced during the Civil War. His portrait still appears today on the 10.00 bill.
