Delaware License Plates

Delaware is the only state in the Union where license plates can be traded and sold like a commodity. Lower DMV numbers, such as 2 digit numbers can bring 6 figures in price. Of course, this isn't the value of the license plate itself, but for the ability to register the license plate with the department of motor vehicles to use on your car. The first car license plate was issued by the state in 1909. Porcelain was used for manufacturing the tags from 1909 thru 1915, then another oddity for license plate history, Delaware came out with another porcelain plate in 1942, twenty five years after most states had abandoned porcelain because of the high cost and chipping from gravel and dirt on the roadways. Delaware started using the slogan The First State in 1963. The Department of Motor Vehicles issued pairs from the beginning in 1909 through 1942 and since that time, the motorists of The First State have only had single tags to put on their automobiles.
