Connecticut License Plates

Connecticut issued their first automobile state license plates in the year 1905. Porcelain was the material used for the license plates through 1916. In 1937 the state made heavy gauge aluminum tags that were the first intended use in the United States of a permanent set of car tags. These plates lasted for 11 years before the next ones were issued. The only slogan used in Connecticut was The Constitution State which started in 1974. CT issued pairs from 1905 through 1979 even including the World War II years, which was an oddity, as most states only produced one license plate during this time because of the shortage of metal due to the war effort. Single tags were produced by the DMV from 1980 through 1986 and from 1987 to the present motorists now have pairs again to put on their cars.
